Pharr Receives Environmentally Friendly Award

Local News

The Texas Department of Transportation office out of Pharr has won a distinguished environmentally friendly award. It deals with a problem brought to their attention on Highway 48 at Bahia Grande.

Brown Pelicans were trying to land or leave the water at low tide and were being hit and killed by vehicles along the way. The Pharr District used research conducted by the Florida Department of Transportation on a similar problem there.

The solution included a series of vertical poles on the bridge which directed marine birds away from traffic. Studies show the poles have reduced deaths of pelicans by close to 64%.
