NCAA Coach Visits the Valley

Local News

NCAA Division Coach David Bailiff from Rice University has been visiting the valley to coach aspiring football players.

This morning high school students met in San Benito for unique training session.

Schools out for just a few days and some students are out on the practice field eager for the next football season to start. This morning valley students had a chance to learn from an NCAA Division coach.

Rice University Head Coach David Bailiff says, “Working hard works. And you have to take care of your business in the classroom and you have to take care of your business in the football field. You have to be passionate of both.”

Rice University is out here for recruitment. This is one of the many camps throughout the state of Texas. They aim to find new play styles and refine known skills.

“It’s a hot afternoon. You could be home playing ‘Game Boy.’  You’re proving that Rice is important,” says Bailiff.

A camp like this is not only to showcase the talent the student athletes have here locally. They also learn new skills from the pros.

Recruiting Coordinator David Sloan says, “These kids have a chance to get a lot of tips, a lot of information. And it’s going to be up to them what they do with it. But at least I think we’re giving them a good chance to get a leg ahead.”

Every Drill, every tackle and every pass has some lesson behind it. Perhaps not all of them will make it to Rice but they’ll at least take the lessons they learned to their next high school season.

“We get to teach them a lot of our terminology. We see how coachable they are and see if they can do some of the specific things we ask them,” says Sloan.

Coach Bailiff remarks, “We’ll be back next year and we’re committed to having a better presence in the valley and have even more relationships.”

Rice coaches tell us that this is the first time in a few years they visit the Valley and have plans to visit again in upcoming years.

Coach Sloan tells us they are expecting an athlete from McAllen Memorial High School at Rice University.
