Murder Suspect Officially Charged

Local News

A San Benito man is officially charged with first degree murder. Homicide suspect, 25-year-old Jesus Ruben Vela, had been in the hospital. He was recovering from injuries he says were self-inflicted with a machete.

Vela also confessed to the sheriff he had killed an alleged cartel member and had buried the body in his backyard. That body was found in an irrigation canal off of Guelker Road in San Benito last week. The Mexican Consulate identified the body as 25-year-old Victor Campos Loo from Matamoros. The sheriff says they will continue their investigation. For now Vela faces a $1 million bond.
