An El Paso mother is behind bars. Police say she abandoned her 4-year-old son at a warehouse in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico.

The Child Crisis Center in El Paso says this is a case like they have never seen before, requiring the cooperation of two countries, to safely return the young boy to the United States.

Police arrested 25-year-old Ruby Esmeralda Gonzalez. She faces a child abandonment charge after police say she left her 4-year-old son at an abandoned warehouse in Juarez back in February.

Investigators say she called El Paso Police on Saturday, June 3 to report him as kidnapped after she saw her son’s photo on the news. The Child Crisis Center said they are offering to help the boy in any way they can.

Lorraine Gomez, Child Crisis Center of El Paso said, “We are prepared here at the Child Crisis Center to go ahead and take in that child until all the proceedings and everything kind of works itself out.”

The 65th District Court in El Paso will likely oversee this case. Judge Yahara Gutierrez says the child will be in the conservatorship of Child Protective Services and placed in foster care. Currently there is no word on when that process will be completed.

Gonzalez is in custody at the El Paso County Jail being held on a $10,000 bond.
