MCALLEN, Texas – New rules are now in effect requiring visible addresses on homes and businesses in McAllen.
McAllen city officials said it is now required that clearly visible addresses must be displayed on all new construction, as well as existing residential, commercial, and industrial establishments.
According to the release, the addresses must include clearly legible numbers, 0-9. The numbers also cannot be less than four inches in height. The new ordinance will go into effect immediately.
There is a $50 fine for non-compliance which will be assigned to first-time offenders. However, if a homeowner complies before a first appearance before the McAllen Municipal Court, the penalty will be dismissed.
City officials said visible addresses increase efficiency in police and fire response time. It will also help with address canvassing and enumerators leading up to and during the 2020 Census.
