Local News

MCALLEN, Texas – A McAllen IDEA school principal has received a huge award and a $25,000 cash prize.

The IDEA College Preparatory McAllen Principal Joán Alvarez was greeted this afternoon by all his students at a surprise ceremony where he was presented with the prestigious Ryan Award which honors transformational school leaders in the U.S.

Alvarez is one of just two recipients receiving this award.

“This award speaks highly of the work our students are doing to fulfill our promise of 100% to and through college and all the hard work that we are doing. I mean it’s a team and family commitment here at our school.” Says Alvarez.

Alvarez will travel to Chicago to receive his cash prize and says he will be donating his $25,000 award to his seniors for scholarships.
