McAllen, Entities Join Forces for Third Annual Clean Sweep

Local News

The city of McAllen, the Texas Department of Transportation, and other Hidalgo county entities joined forces for the third annual Operation Clean Sweep, Tuesday.

The project began in May of 2014 in efforts to offer cyclists cleaner and safer roadways, as well as increase awareness about road safety.

Elvira Alonzo, McAllen Public Works Director said crews were set to clean a total of 106 miles of bike lanes and road shoulders.

Octavio Saenz, a TxDOT spokesperson, said the eight southernmost counties in Texas spend around $2 million in maintenance every year.

Saenz added that sweep projects like this may help prevent bicycle related accidents.

Other entities who participated in the sweep were Edinburg, Pharr, San Juan, Alamo, Mission, La Villa, Alton, and Hidalgo County Precinct 2.
