The McAllen Chamber of Commerce is looking for one prospective tenant to fill its current vacancy at the McAllen Creative Incubator. The incubator is open to different types of artists.
“We have multimedia artists right now. We have a porcelain painter, we have acting instructors, Chinese, martial arts. Anybody who’s interested can apply,” said Laura Robles, Cultural Arts and Incubator Coordinator.
Dania is a current tenant and says she’s able to produce her art and travel to Austin where she has the most customers. “It’s my space,” she said. “I can do my art. As you can see I have windows, I have a lot of light. People can come and see my art through my wall [because it’s glass].” Dania also likes to hold exhibits a few times a year to build clientele in the Rio Grande Valley.
The applications are available for download at www.mcallenart.com. Artists must also submit a business plan with their application, stating what they wish to accomplish as tenants at the incubator. The process also consists of an interview and a background check, and artists who are currently on their waiting list will be considered first. The monthly cost for a 12×12 studio office is $175, and artists will have the ability to come and go as they please.
The McAllen Chamber of Commerce wants to help emerging artists by providing a space where they can work comfortably and at their own pace. Their vision is to put the city of McAllen on the map as an artistic area and to enhance the cultural vitality of the community.
