U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office in Brownsville is preparing for the busy holiday that brings hundreds of consumers to the Rio Grande Valley, but the wait time on the bridge could put a damper on sales.

Right now, the estimated wait time on the Gateway International Bridge is about an hour to an hour and 45 minutes and US Customs and Border Protection believes number may nearly double during Semana Santa.

And stores in downtown Brownsville, minutes away from the bridge, could be impacted by the long wait time

CBP also encourages travelers to use radio-frequency identification technology travel documents such as U.S. passport cards and the newer versions of the border crossing card and resident alien card so that they can use Ready Lanes, as they are 20 percent faster than normal lanes

For now, travelers can monitor border wait times online or with an app available on smartphones. These wait times are updated on an hourly basis.
