RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – It’s Friday and Local 23 News is observing what we call Founder’s Day.
It’s a day to celebrate the founding of our parent company and what better way to celebrate than by giving back to those that need it most.
“Local 23 isn’t just a part of our name it’s who we are and giving back to the local community is, you know, everything we want to be a part of.” Said Derick Garcia, KVEO Reporter.
On Friday KVEO employees rolled up their sleeves and got to work out in the community. From folding and sorting clothes to sweeping and waxing floors, no task was too big or too small for the KVEO crew, helping organizations like the Salvation Army serving Hidalgo County since 1931.
“The Salvation army has the only shelter open to the public for emergency and transitional cases. We also have a soup kitchen that serves the public on a daily basis with hot meals.” Said Mario Quintanilla, Salvation Army Public Relations.
Annually the Salvation Army provides more than 66,000 hot meals, 13,000 nights of room lodging and 15,000 clothing vouchers.
“Any part that I can take in a company that is willing to participate in something like this, I’m all for it.” Said Leonardo Soto, KVEO account executive.
The KVEO team also teaming up with the food pantry at the Church of Christ in Harlingen. The non-profit organization with some assistance from the United Way gives vital food donations to area residents. On a weekly basis they assist nearly a thousand residents, including the homeless.
“Some of these people have nothing. Some of these people have no food in their refrigerator or their cupboard and they are here early. We open at 9, they may be here at 2 in the morning.” Said Wende Coffman, Food Pantry board member.
Both organizations say volunteers play a vital role in aiding in the community and add they are always in need of more volunteers.
“We know that this is a community that has raised us to put their faith in us to tell the most accurate reports. Now it’s our time to give back and give back to them.” Said Derick Garcia, KVEO Reporter.
