Kittens Being Saved from Euthanasia by Grass Roots Campaign in Racho Viejo

Local News

A grass roots effort to handle the cat population in Rancho Viejo is working. The director of advoCAT says, it’s not about euthanizing or relocating the animal. News Center 23’s Derick Garcia, has the details.

Jennie Johnson, Director of advoCAT says, “Feeding a cat is not just taking care of it, spaying and neutering and feeding it is taking care of it”

Trap. Neuter. Release. It’s not a new concept but for Jennie Johnson, Director of advoCAT, it’s working in Rancho Viejo. And with hundreds of rescued cats, there are no signs of giving up.

Jennie Johnson, ”It doesn’t mean that all those cats live in Rancho Viejo”

Jennie and 10 volunteers keep advoCAT ‘purring.’ The grassroots nonprofit is more than just a Her team, it’s a community effort to keep the cat population at bay.

Jennie Johnson, “Instead of them going to the shelter and chances of them being euthanized is very great we can take them and return them to live happy lives outside or prepare them for adoption.”

On Wednesday Jennie welcomed a new kitten to her converted garage, socializing center.

Jennie, “A resident found her on the frontage road this morning. She was very dehydrated needed food and water. She’s probably about 4 weeks old.”

The whole objective is to have them spayed and find them a good home just like Nieves here. She’s already socialized and in just a couple days she’ll be ready to be spayed.

And for some cats finding them homes is part of advoCATs mission. Humanely handling the population is the mission and a part of their… ‘Hiss-tory’

advoCAT has kept the cat population at bay for 8 years and can be expensive. Jennie says she’s helped hundreds of cats and is ready to do more but she needs help. In July, they’ll be having a garage sale with proceeds going toward vet costs, food and of course. Toys!

We’ll have the details on our website. Just look for this story on rgvproud.com.
