MCALLEN, Texas – One local youth organization is hoping to inspire kids in the Rio Grande Valley to learn about hockey. In February the Junior Killer Bees Hockey Team of McAllen will be competing at a tournament on the home ice of the Dallas Stars.
Jason Stros, President/Coach Jr. Killer Bees, “We’re here to provide an outlet for the kids to come learn something. To come learn a different sport.”
Coach Stros says the league provides kids a unique opportunity to be introduced to a sport not common in the Valley.
Rob Nixon, director of fundraising, “I would imagine that 95 percent of the Valley wouldn’t even imagine that we have a hockey team down here.”
The league is open to all boys and girls who get to learn from coaches who have played at collegiate levels. In February the team will head to Dallas to compete at a Dallas Stars Hockey tournament. Something all the players are ready for.
But to get the entire team there, the Junior Killer Bees are in need of some support.
Coach Stros, “We’re looking for sponsorships from businesses. To come out and get these kids to a place they’ve never been before and represent the Valley.
The coach and his staff are equally super excited at the opportunity to teach what they call one of the most rewarding sports in the Rio Grande Valley. Teaching kids to be teammates and teaching each other along the way.
