‘It’s Time Texas’ hosting Health Awareness walk

Local News

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The Rio Grande Valley is taking a step forward towards bettering the health of the community by walking. “Texas Walks” is a campaign created by the organization “It’s Time Texas”. The movement is bringing awareness toward the benefits of walking and how it can benefit one’s health. The walk may only be 10 minutes long but experts say it’s a good start.

Esmeralda Flores, City of Brownsville Wellness Manager, “Sometimes we’re very busy with our lifestyle, that even a minimum of 10 minutes a day can improve our lifestyles and to live healthier and active lives. It helps reduce blood pressure and it helps you feel de-stressed as well.”

In a recent study, Texas was named one of the unhealthiest states in the U.S. Lack of exercise has been linked to many of those health problems. Experts say walking can lower your risk of cancer, diabetes and obesity.

“We have over 80 percent that are obese or overweight, one in three individuals do have diabetes. We do realize that we have a problem here in the area.” says Flores.

Texas Walks is encouraging everyone to go on a walk, no matter where you are

Elva Pena, It’s Time Texas Regional Manager, “We are really encouraging people to create their own group or if they have a park pretty close by they can use that park and go on a walk there.”

This is not just a one day event. The goal for “Texas Walks” is to get the community to incorporate this into their everyday life. If you want to get involved with Texas Walks, meet them at Linear Park in Brownsville or at the Brownsville Animal Regulation and Care center on Friday, Nov. 8 at 10:00 a.m.
