Three Iowa State football players saved a woman after her car submerged into a canal near the 1700 block of Padre Blvd.

At around 8 p.m. on March 16, the players witnessed a car drive into a canal from the balcony of their hotel. Without hesitation, the players ran to the car.

Within a minute the car was fully submerged.

The three attempted to break her loose, punching the windshield, but nothing seemed to work.

“I was getting worried that we were going to watch this girl drown to death, because no matter how hard we were hitting it, it wasn’t cracking or spidering for a while,” Anthony Lazard said.

Finally, a small hole in the windshield turned into a large enough gap for the players to pull the woman to safety.

The woman, identified as 22 year old Luisa Maria Castro of San Antonio, was then arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. Reports state that Castro’s blood alcohol content was almost twice the legal limit of .08.
