“If you can fly a rocket to Mars, I’m sure that you can figure out that the homes that are right next to the rocket will be affected.” says local attorney on SpaceX buyout proposal

Local News

The clock is ticking to accept an offer from SpaceX to residents living near Boca Chica Beach.

As we’ve reported, the space exploration company is looking to buy every property near its facilities at 3 times their price. Despite that some tell us they will not take the offer.

Tonight Local 23 News meets with a local attorney about the offer, and what it means to residents affected.

Attorney Alex Martinez says, “ I believe that the property owners are being taken advantage of. If you can fly a rocket to mars, I’m sure that you can figure out that the homes that are right next to the rocket will be affected.”

Many of the residents who bought properties near current day SpaceX facilities did so originally as a retirement home near the beach. Now that SpaceX is here, some tell us that they feel like they’re being bullied out of their dream home.

“It is negotiable, it’s not correct that they say it’s not negotiable,” says Martinez.

Martinez compares the situation to having commercial fracking operation nearby. He tells us the company should to help residents end up in a similar living situation to how things were before the company move in.

“It would be a person living next to the beach, happily in a property that they own, in a situation where they can live peacefully,” says Martinez
