MCALLEN, Texas - Hurricane season is underway and organizations are urging families to prepare their homes for severe weather.
A Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid attorney says homeowners and renters can all do their part in protecting their homes from excessive damage. They can do so by clearing clutter, cutting dead limbs and removing debris from drainage areas.
"If you have basic homeowners insurance, you may not have windstorm insurance, so you really need to find out what is covered because you may be paying for something and the hurricane hits and they're not able to make the repairs because of your coverage." says Sasha Stremler.
Stremler also encourages folks to take plenty of pictures of their homes before any storms hit. The photos will make it easier for FEMA and insurance companies to approve disaster relief funds.
