How BISD Students and Teachers Could Receive 40,000 New, Free Books

Local News

A local teacher union partnering with the Brownsville Independent School District to get students and teachers thousands of new books.

Brownsville Educators Stand Together, a chapter of American Federation of Teachers, are on a mission to collect 2,000 signatures of BISD employees, so they can in turn receive 40,000 brand new, free books from First Book, a partner of AFT to distribute to students and teachers.

“We’re just super excited to be able to do this because kids love to have a book in their hands,” said Mary Katherine Nieto, Librarian at BISD.

The teacher union must collect 2,000 signatures by April 12, if 4,000 signatures are collected, the district will receive 80,000 books in time for the start of the new school year in Fall 2019.
