50-year-old Alberto Henandez Gallegos, a legal permanent resident, crossed through the Hidalgo Port of Entry on January 25th.

During an outbound inspection by Customs and Border Protection, officers allegedly discovered more than a million dollars hidden inside a speaker box in the trunk’s vehicle.

The charges allege Gallegos was aware of the currency, but not the total amount. He allegedly planned to smuggle the currency for others in return for $1,000.

If convicted, Gallegos faces up to five years in federal prison. He could also lose his status as a legal permanent resident.
