Hidalgo County health authorities are looking into five other possible mumps cases.
The first confirmed case was from a student at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, Edinburg campus.
But Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Director Eduardo Olivarez is now saying that they believe the source of the virus is not the university.
Olivarez also confirmed the illness was not generated by the county’s immigrant community.
An alert has been issued to local doctors to test for mumps in patients showing symptoms which include fever, muscle aches, headache and loss of appetite.
We’ll have more from health officials on Local 23 at five and ten tomorrow.
