HEB and BFD sponsor cookoff in remembrance of 9/11 anniversary

Local News

HEB joined forces today with dozens of members of the Brownsville Fire Department to honor the victims of 9/11 14 years ago. But Assistant Fire Chief Cesar Pedraza says despite this being arguably the worst tragedy in America, we were left with a glimmer of hope.

“They, however, brought out the best in a lot of Americans, including our local HEBs that have done a terrific job helping us deal with the tragedy,” said BFD Asst. Chief Cesar Pedraza. “It helps us on a daily basis as far as taking our minds off the event of September 11th.”

“We just wanted to give back to our local firefighters, they’re our local heroes who risk their lives every day,” said HEB PIO Yvonne Loflin. “And after September 11, we understand how much everyone’s sacrificing and what it means to them, so we just wanted to be a part of that day and just kind of take their mind off it.”

…which is why HEB introduced something new for this event:

“We asked our firefighters, what they’d like to do a little different, what would make them happy and enjoy today, and they said ‘Cookoff. We’re all about the competition and bragging rights’ and we thought ‘okay, we can do that,” said Loflin.

That cookoff featured dozens of pounds of fajita meat, all seasoned and tenderized to the best abilities of each local fire station.

“So all our stations are preparing the cooking for all the fajitas,” said Pedraza. “They are being judged independently, and all of this is being sponsored by HEB so we’re very fortunate.”

HEB gave away two gift baskets for the second and third place winners, the first place winner got $500 and a gift certificate to HEB.

“And it is…station 7!”

But keeping in tune with the day as a 9/11 remembrance, firefighters say that day has brought out some of the best of the community.

“It has brought out brotherhood closer, it brings our families closer and it really makes us appreciate one another,” said Pedraza.
