The city of Harlingen is known for their fast recycling services. Pull up, and drive off. Sometimes in as little as two minutes. One of the added benefits to recycling in the city of Harlingen is their drive up service. However, they do ask customers to keep their speed limit at five miles per hour.
In efforts to increase environmental awareness and conservation, the recycling center is now offering group tours.
“We want to start educating our young students, our young community to start recycling, to start being environmentally conscious, and to take care of your city and take care of the community as a whole,” said Melissa Landin, Harlingen Public Information Officer.
John Dauma is a regular at the recycling center and thinks it is a great idea to educate the community about the importance of recycling.
“They do a fantastic job here. They’re very courteous. They unload [our recyclables], and take good care of us,” he said.
The city has partnered with Keep Harlingen Beautiful to facilitate the tours. The organization is also in charge of city improvement projects.
“Recycling materials that we sell go directly to them, and they in turn, do beautification projects; planting trees, flowers. Other things throughout the city to make Harlingen look beautiful,” explains John Avilez, Harlingen Recycling Center Director.
The group tours will be offered Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
