A tribute festival for Latin Grammy Award winning singer Jimmy Gonzalez is confirmed to be in the works. Gonzalez’s nephew, Adolfo Garcia, confirmed via facebook, “we are in the process of making the 1st ‘Forever Jimmy G festival’. For those who don’t know, my mother Cindy Garcia is Jimmy’s sister.” The post continues, “I’m helping my mom organize this event. We are planning an all day Sunday event to make it family friendly.”
The festival date is not set nor is the venue however, the post is a call to action for musicians and vendors to celebrate the Tejano Icon.
Gonzalez died Wednesday morning in San Antonio from a cardiac arrest due to low blood sugar. The 67-year-old Brownsville,TX native was a diabetic for years.
Gonzalez is survived by his wife of 19 years, Anna Lisa Gonzalez, his 5 sons: Henry Lee (Patricia), James “Junebug” (Lenore), Lee Michael “Mikey” (Nancy), Joseph “Choch” (Celina), and Robert Lee “Uker” (Erica) and their mother, Yolanda Solis. He was the proud grandfather of 10: Lee Michael Jr., Dominic James, Jaymee Leigh, Myranda Jolie, Miranda Larysse, Nicholas Anthony, Meagan Grace, Henry Lee, and Sofia Lee. Jimmy will also be missed by his siblings: Beatriz “Bea” Villarreal, Julia “Lulu” Garza, Tommie (Betty) Gonzalez, Cindy (Adolfo) Garcia, and Norma Lee (Lonnie) Valdez along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
In the late 1970s the childhood friends from Brownsville, TX formed Grupo Mazz. When the band split, in 1999, Jimmy and Joe found success in their own projects.
