Government Shutdown Affecting UTRGV Projects

Local News

The 25th day of the government shut down is affecting a new project at UTRGV. The university was recently granted over $660,000 by the U.S. Department of Transportation to provide students with covered waiting areas for the bus. The university is still waiting for the funds to begin construction.

Gabriel Zuniga, UTRGV Director of Transportation, “We were hoping to have these ready by the end of August, but we don’t know if that’s actually going to happen. The grant is supposed to expire at the end of this fiscal year, but with the government furlough we don’t know when we’re going to get that money. Once the President and Congress decide they’re going to end whatever it is that’s going on, the state and their agencies can get going with the process and that’s when we can get going with this project.”

When completed, the project will include bike racks, proper lighting, and covered waiting areas in the Brownsville, Harlingen and Edinburg campuses.
