BROWNSVILLE, Texas – One local group from Brownsville is being recognized for their commitment to serving asylum seekers in Matamoros. They will be receiving an award for their work and humanitarian efforts.

Sergio Cordova and Michael Benavides are dedicating their life to helping those on the other side of the border. They started a non-profit organization called “Team Brownsville”. They launched their GoFundMe campaign this past January. Their goal, to raise money for food and supplies to give asylum seekers in Matamoros. Especially during the cold nights they are currently facing.

Michael Benavides, Co-Founder, Team Brownsville, “We’re providing the same support in the form of meals and right now it’s getting really cold. We have blankets, gloves, hoodies, anything we can do to keep them as comfortable as possible while they are waiting.”

Their humanitarian work is being recognized nationally. Tthey are being awarded the first ever GoFundMe Community Nominated Heroes Award. With thousands of people nominated, Cordova and Benavides are among five chosen for the award. They say this wouldn’t be possible without the help of the community.

Sergio Cordova, “Everything that we do is completely through donations, through our GoFundMe and through our webpage. Everything we do the meals, the help here at the bus station.”

Team Brownsville has been going to Matamoros five times a week to serve them hot meals. Along with many other local groups providing migrants and children clothing and supplies during the cold weather.
