The Brownsville Historic Battlefield Trail Fort Brown Connection is currently underway in Downtown Brownsville.

Slated for completion in November 2016, the Fort Brown Connection includes the construction of 2.75 miles of bicycle and pedestrian enhancements through Downtown Brownsville to expand the existing nine-mile Historic Battlefield Trail.

Presently, the Historic Battlefield Trail connects the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park to Linear Park. The Fort Brown Connection will expand the trail to include a connection between Linear Park and the historic Fort Brown earthworks, ultimately providing a bicycle and pedestrian connection between Brownsville’s three historic battlefield sites: Fort Brown earthworks; Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park; and the Resaca de la Palma Battlefield site.

The Fort Brown Connection includes the following additions:

  • five-foot bicycle lanes through striping and the installation of permanent delineated barriers;
  • ADA-compliant sidewalks and cross-slopes consisting of alternating concrete and brick pattern hardscape; and
  • bicycle amenities: bicycle racks, benches, trash receptacles, and way-finding signage.

The Fort Brown Connection was funded in part by the Transportation Enhancement Program through the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in 2013.
