PHARR, Texas – Hidalgo County has its first ever indoor sports facility that is free and open to the public. Precinct 2 Commissioner Eduardo “Eddie” Cantu, said the new facility will allow the youth of Hidalgo County to practice baseball and softball year round, in a safe environment at no cost.

“I spoke with parents and coaches and they all shared the same sentiment: Hidalgo County needed a baseball training facility and we needed experienced coaches,” said Cantu. “Our staff took these comments to heart and we worked to build a facility that would meet the athletic needs of all the children in the county.”

Cantu threw out the ceremonial first pitch officially opening the doors to the 24,750 square foot facility, the first of its kind south of San Antonio. The free, public, indoor baseball and softball facility is located at 3600 Athol St. in Pharr. It features eight batting cages, a full-sized infield, and two pitching mounds. The facility is available to all Hidalgo County residents and reservations are made online on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Onsite experts will assist in softball and baseball training techniques. The staff includes, Indoor Sports Complex Manager Carlos Bracamontes, and Athletic Coordinator Eric Gonzalez. Gonzalez, a former professional baseball player and hitting coach, will offer one-on-one batting lessons to anyone who registers. Along with baseball training, the county Wellness Program Coordinator Diana Huallpa will offer free workout classes for nearly 4,000 county employees. This wellness initiative will encourage county employees to work out and live a healthier lifestyle, all the while helping reduce health care cost for the county.
