Father, Husband Found Dead on Texas Beach

KVEO News Center 23 has learned the identity of the male found in the water at Andy Bowie Park. Justice of the Peace Bennie Ochoa III, tells News Center 23, an autopsy for Nelson Melendez has been ordered. 

Melendez, 67, is a McAllen native according to Ochoa. In a press release from Cameron County Park Rangers, on October 8th, 2018, at around 7:00am, a citizen found an unresponsive male in the water about 1/4 mile north of Andy Bowie Park. “The subject had what appeared to be a gunshot wound.” the press release said. An investigation is on-going with the assistance of the South Padre Island Police. 

Melendez’s served in the United States Air Force, according to his obituary, “from 1969 and was honorably discharged in 1995. Nelson was an air traffic controller for the McAllen Airport for 21 years.” the obituray said.
