‘Fajita Bandit’ Asking For A New Trial, Says 50 Years In Prison Too Harsh

Local News

Many Valley residents were surprised to see a former Cameron County employee sentenced to 50 years in prison for stealing Fajita meat.

Now attorneys for 53-year-old Gilberto Escamilla have asked for a new trial. They say the punishment was too harsh for the crime. A motion was filed after the stiff sentence on May 11.

Escamilla plead guilty but he never expected five decades behind bars. He was convicted of stealing more than $1 million worth of Fajita over 9-years; including brisket, pork, and sausage.

The court has yet to decide whether to grant a new trial.
