Faith groups protest asylum seeker policy

Local News

BROWNSVLLE, Texas – A series of protests taking place from now until Presidents’ Day.

Faith groups gathering at the base of the Gateway International Bridge to stand in solidarity with asylum seekers on the other side of the border. The groups are protesting migrant protection protocols also known as the Remain in Mexico policy. They say rather than protect, MPP endangers asylum seekers.

The Department of Homeland Security describes the policy as a measure to restore order at the border and a safe immigration process. DHS claims the program “decreases the number of those taking advantage of the immigration system.”
