Edcouch Fire Destroys Homes, Residents Upset With Response Time

Some Edcouch residents woke up overnight to a massive house fire. Multiple agencies responded as families rushed out of their homes.

It was just before 10:00 a.m. when multiple agencies responded to a house fire that caught two other homes on fire. One resident says she was asleep when she heard a bang on her door.

Leslie Verastugi, “He was like, hey you guys need to get out. You need to get out the house, it’s on fire. He grabbed my baby and started knocking on the houses for everyone to get out.”

Two of the homes were destroyed in the fire. One of the homes that was made of brick received exterior damage. Neighbors say the home that burned to the ground was abandoned.

“It took the fire department and the police 25 minutes. The fire station is two blocks away. La Villa got here first.” said Verastugi.

The American Red Cross arrived on scene to assess the damage. Also assisting the family with their losses. 

Santana Garcia, American Red Cross, “We’re here to find some information as to what their needs are. To see what we can do to fulfill their needs, but we do a little bit of everything.”

Leslie Verastugi home only received the exterior damage. She says she’s thankful for her neighbors actions.

The fire marshal says the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
