Driving Service ‘Lyft’ now Available in the RGV

Local News

Valley residents can now take advantage of driving and riding with Lyft. It’s a service many say is long overdue.

Ruben Aguilera – UTRGV Student said, “It might be useful for the Valley. We might need something like that here.”

Edinburg, McAllen and Harlingen are three of the five cities in Texas where Lyft is now available.
The app based service can easily get you from point A to point B. Just add your pickup location and request your ride. It’s a convenient way to get around for those with no car, or for a night out drinking with friends.

Victor Rodriguez – McAllen Police Chief, “If you’re choosing a transportation and the need is because you’ve been drinking, in that context, having a designated driver is always best. It’s safest for the person doing it and it’s safer for our community as well.”

And while Lyft carefully screens the driver prior to their hire, some say it won’t be their first option when they need a ride.

“It’s good for those people who are drunk and stuff, but me personally, I’d rather not have them know where I live because you never know. They might be secretly stalkers and never tell you or the company.” Said Nadisi Fuentez, UTRGV Student

Chief Rodriguez added, “If a citizen experiences a negative event with one of these services, they need to make certain to report those to the subscribing agent. You never know who they are, where they came from. Those kinds of things. So you always want to be suspicious of that.”

In the valley, the average driver can make as much as $500 for driving just 25 hours per week. Even if you don’t have your own car.

To celebrate the launch, Lyft is offering new passengers $5.00 off their first Lyft ride. You can redeem your credit using the code: lyftlove17
