District Votes to Close Three Elementary Schools

The BISD Brownsville Independent School District Board of Trustees voted to close all three elementary schools: Victoria Heights, Longoria and Resaca at special board meeting Thursday. 

Due to low student enrollment, the district recommended closing Resaca Elementary School and consolidating Sharp and Putegnat, closing Victoria Heights and consolidating Perez Elementary, and closing Longoria and consolidating Canales Elementary this would include a total of $150,000 from local funds. 

Decline in enrollment over the past 10 years from 2010 to projected 2020 school year was 5,756 students.

No personnel would be lost.
