Local News

HARLINGEN, Texas – Harlingen schools are preparing the for future of employment in the Rio Grande Valley. Today the Texas Workforce Commission awarding the Harlingen CISD district over $100,000 for furthering education in STEM related fields.

Dr. Jessica Hruska, Coordinator, Instructional Technology in Special Projects, This grant was awarded to us to enhance and procure equipment for the STEM related classes and courses, specifically in mechatronics.

With the funds the students will have access to cutting edge technology. They’ll acquire devices like virtual reality headsets and industrial 3D printers and other materials industry professionals use today.

Julian Alvarez, Texas Commissioner representing Labor, A lot of times people think that programs like these don’t exist down here, but they do. Many school districts are on the cutting edge and teaching some of the most advanced technologies in the state.

With the new equipment the district can further it’s student certification courses. Meaning students could have further job-related training before finishing high school or even before starting college.

Dr. Art Cavazos, HCISD Superintendent, The importance of these type of technologies is that it provides experiences to kids we would otherwise not be able to provide. You would have to go to different plants to operations as they exist. Here it brings it to their level and brings it to our community.

You have a district, you have a higher education partner, you have business and community partners coming together for children’s education and really grooming the next generation workforce. Said Dr. Hruska.

Alvarez adds, Today was a perfect example of how they use our tax dollars or our grants to train these individuals.

HCISD was one of the seven recipients of the Jobs Education for Texans Grants, an initiative for career and technical education programs available to the public.
