DHS requests more troops to the border

Local News

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The Department of Homeland Security has officially requested more U.S. troops and logistical support at the U.S. – Mexico border.

Two U.S. defense officials say the request arrived late Wednesday. The officials say the request is being reviewed and it’s unclear when a decision will be made on it.

There are currently 3,000 active duty troops and two-thousand national guard personnel deployed for border security.

Acting defense secretary Patrick Shanahan says he does not have a specific number in mind when it comes to how many more troops should be sent to the border.
