It’s been nearly 60 days since Cameron and Hidalgo counties were declared a disaster area. After the historic rains that fell in June, FEMA has allocated $26 million in grant monies for those affected. The deadline for residents to apply for aid is Tuesday, September 4.
U.S. Congressman Vicente Gonzalez says, “Please do yourself a favor, if you have been impacted, go out and see what kind of benefits you qualify for. There are also some low interest loans that you may qualify for on top of the grant monies.”
Congressman Gonzalez believes the funds are being under-utilized and encourages everyone affected to apply.
“You can apply online or you can go to one of the FEMA offices. We have one in Mission, we have one in McAllen and one in La Feria.”
Since the assistance was offered, nearly 5,000 applicants have applied and have been approved for funding. It’s not just property owners who can qualify, renters may also apply for assistance.
“If there is anything my office can do to help please reach out to us and don’t delay. September 4th is the deadline and it’s coming upon us pretty fast.”
If you would like more information about the FEMA assistance call 1-800-621-3362. The offices are however closed today in observance of the holiday.
