Courthouse Restorations Underway

Local News

The Texas Historical Commission awarded nearly half a million dollars for reconstruction of a courthouse.

Cameron County will receive state funds to restore the Dancy Building on East Monroe.

This grant is part of a 2 million dollar project to restore the architecture of the historic building.

The county administrator says this building is one of the few structures the county has restored and maintained operational in downtown Brownsville.

Cameron County Administrator David Garcia says, “These are items that were not done during the renovation when we opened in 2008… A lot of it had to do with window restoration. There was a lot of seepage and a lot of water coming in through the windows. The rooftop had some damage so these are things we want to make sure we have in place so the building is in adequate condition for many years to come.”

Currently, the Courthouse is finishing up a one-point-nine million dollar window restoration.

Once started, the next phase is expected to last 6 to 9 months.
