Cameron County authorities are raising awareness to child abuse and neglect in the Rio Grande Valley.
Today, Casa of Cameron and Willacy Counties, the district attorney’s office, and Palms Behavioral Health Center encourage the community to take a stand against child abuse.
They’re asking residents to speak out and report instances of child abuse. Saying a family member or close acquaintance may often be the cause of long-term psychological harm in a child.
Joe Medrano, CASA of Cameron and Willacy Counties, “Every 8 minutes a child becomes a victim of child abuse or neglect. It’s important that we here in Brownsville and Cameron County understand that there is a need to keep an eye out.”
Francisco Torres, psychiatrist, Palms Behavioral Health, “Normally they [children] keep this to themselves. I want to tell them that we are here for them and I want to tell them all these organizations are here to stand up next to them.”
Each year approximately 211 children die from abuse or neglect in Texas with close to 60 percent of victims under the age of six.
