BROWNSVILLE, Texas — Local donut establishments are celebrating National Donut Day with free donuts. It’s not just about a little extra dough and sugar. The national holiday traces its roots to 1938 in remembrance to a pivotal part of World War I.
It’s a reference to ‘donut lassies’ from the Salvation Army who would provide overseas soldiers with fresh treats. Today, donut shops like, the local Dunkin’ Donuts, are offering one free donut with the purchase of a drink.
