Home Invasion in San Benito

Cameron County sheriff investigators are looking for a second suspect on the run after an attempted home invasion last night in the outskirts of San Benito.

“Yesterday about 10:50 the dispatcher received a call by a concerned citizen who stated he saw a couple of people on the roadside of 281 who appeared to be carrying a weapon and were dressed all in dark clothing,” says sheriff Omar Lucio.

Minutes later deputies arrived. The two armed men had been waiting on the young homeowner to drive up. Officers heard the woman’s screams for help as the two men attempted to drag her into her home at gunpoint… according to the report, they demanded money.

“They really really were there in the nick of time to really prevent probably this individual really hurting that female,” says Lucio.

One suspect held a 9mm handgun, the other one a rifle. And they were not afraid to point those weapons at the officers.

“However when the deputy pulled his weapon out, the individual saw that and he took off running, as a matter of fact both of them took off running,” says Lucio.

The foot chase ended about a block away… and only one suspect was caught, 25 year old Manuel Martinez Duenas from San Benito, now charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated assault on a peace officer and organized crime. A bond total of $150,000 dollars.

“I’d like to thank the people that called. Anytime you see something unusual, it doesn’t matter whether they think it is worth calling or not, just to give us a call,” says Lucio.

A suspect is behind bars and a weapon has been confiscated but the Cameron County Sheriff is still looking for that second suspect that is out on the loose and armed with a rifle.

The investigation continues as they try to locate the second suspect. Border patrol’s K-9 unit has assisted in the search. The only known description is a male in dark clothing.
