“It is a very very serious problem,” said Cameron County DA Luis Saenz. “It is the kind of crime like any other crime that impacts the family. And domestic violence, it’s something that tears the family apart.”
…Which is why the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office has launched a campaign called “No Excuse for Abuse”. It’s designed to educate and inform the public about this widely spread issue of domestic violence that continues to grow.
“It’s a very, very serious problem for us and we have a lot of cases that seem to be on the increase, and we’re very concerned about that,” said Saenz.
Saenz says one of the main reasons for recurring domestic violence cases is because women, who are statistically more liekly to be the victim than men, tend to drop the prosecution charges after a while.
“It’s very difficult at that point to prosecute the case because the victim, which is the wife or the girlfriend, sometimes wants to rethink her position, because she knows that if she goes forward with the charges that more than likely the offender will lose his job,” said Saenz.
The DA’s Office is hosting an event later this month called Petals on the Lake at the TSC Fine Arts Center. Flower petals will be released into the resaca in memory of domestic violence victims.
The public encourage to go and show support.
