California Group Visits RGV in Response to Family Separation

MCALLEN, TX - From California to Brownsville, humanitarian activists visit the border region to deliver donations and stand in solidarity for unaccompanied minors.

This week we met with the Bay Area Border Relief. They are a group from San Francisco, California. They are here as a response to the president’s family separation policy. On December 1st, the group of 25 held a protest outside of Southwest Key Casa Padre in Brownsville.

Member of the Bay Area Border Relief group, Lilli Rey says, “It is still happening. Because it’s not on the front page news anymore, I would say the collective conscious  in our country has settled down because they think it’s over with.”

This is the third time the group comes to the Valley. Their first visit was back in June 2018 to donate clothes, they volunteered at the Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen in July and On December 1st, the group attempted to deliver 1,500 bags with clothes and food to unaccompanied minors at the Brownsville Detention center. Their request was denied as Southwest Key Casa Padre does not take donations directly.

Their efforts were not in vain. They are collaborated with The Catholic Charities of the RGV and the Respite Center in McAllen. The bags are handed out to the many asylum seekers that go through the respite center daily. Sister Norma Pimentel says, “It’s a privilege” to have visitors “come together in response to care for families.”

When asked why they chose to visit Brownsville when the California Border is dealing with a humanitarian crisis of its own, they say the South Texas Border is where it all started for them.

Member Sue Harris comments, “We came out here and found that the need was great and we just became a good partner with catholic charities… That’s not to say that we won’t be able to do things back in our own state.”

Most members of the Bay Area Border Relief Group left on Monday December 3rd. The remaining few is returning Tuesday (Dec. 4) afternoon.
