Brownsville City Commission Awarded $500K for Public Market

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – On April 16, 2019, the Brownsville City Commission voted to accept a $500,000 grant from the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation to renovate the Quonset Hut located on 6th and Ringgold Streets in Brownsville Texas into the Cannery Public Market.

The Cannery Public Market is a food hub project initiated by the City of Brownsville in collaboration with the Brownsville Wellness Coalition and the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley, to increase access to fresh, healthy, and affordable local food in the Mitte Cultural District of the City of Brownsville. 

The Cannery Public Market project will be funded by the $500,000 grant from the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation, $250,000 of city funds authorized by the Brownsville City Commission, $178,575 pending from the USDA Healthy Food Financing Initiative and $60,000 from the USDA Wholesale Market and Food Hub Design Division.
