BREAKING: Texas DPS Trooper shot, suspect on the loose

EDINBURG, Texas – UPDATE: The Texas DPS is looking for the whereabouts of 24-year-old Victor Alejandro Godinez of Edinburg. He is the suspect involved in the shooting in the 1500 block of south Maltese Street north of Freddy Gonzalez. University police received information that the suspect involved in a police shooting was in the vicinity of the UTRGV Edinburg Campus. Heavy police presence in the area. Shelter in place and avoid the area of the Edinburg Campus if possible. More information to follow. Stay with Local 23 News for the updates.

According to a preliminary investigation, at approximately 8:45 p.m. this evening a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Trooper approached a crash scene where the driver fled on foot. The Trooper located who we believe to be the driver near the 1500 block of South Maltese Street in Edinburg. At some point after making contact with the suspect, the Trooper was shot. The Trooper has been transported to a local hospital.

The suspect is believed to be in the area, and the public is asked to avoid the area near North 10th Street and Freddy Gonzalez in Edinburg. DPS is working with local law enforcement agencies to locate the suspect. This is an ongoing incident and no additional information is currently available. Updates will be released as we have more information.
