An 8-year-old Guatemalan boy died Christmas morning in the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection while detained in Alamagordo, New Mexico.
He’s the second Guatemalan child to die in CBP custody this month.
The boy was taken to the hospital Monday after a border agent noticed signs of illness.
He was first diagnosed with a common cold, then a fever. The boy began vomiting and was taken back to the hospital where he later died.
The official cause of death is unknown.
CBP says they are conducting a review and will release more details as it becomes available.
