Bill to mitigate flow of migrants

Local News

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – Three valley Congressmen are teaming up to tackle the humanitarian crisis along our border, taking a different approach to asylum claims.

Representatives Filemon Vela, Vicente Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar say they want to ease the burden on border communities.

They introduced a bill to mitigate the flow of migrants by assessing refugee claims in the migrant’s country of origin by setting up processing centers within northern triangle countries like Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.

This will allow migrants to avoid the dangerous journey to the U.S.

“It will also diminish the backlog of cases pending in immigration courts by reducing the number of new cases and deter fraudulent asylum claims that prevent the timely protection for legitimate refugees fleeing dire and dangerous circumstances.” Says Congressman Cuellar.
