“Growing up here in Brownsville Texas, never in my wildest dreams did i imagine i’d be working in a project of this size scope and magnitude,” says BEDC Vice President Gilberto Salinas.
Vice president of the Brownsville Economic Development Council, Gilberto Salinas, is referring to now undertaking an additional role… that is being a new member of governor greg abbot’s aerospace and aviation committee.
“What we’re doing right now in south texas is very much aligned with what he’s trying to do on the lines of economic development and really grabbing the model that we use down here,” says Salinas.
Salinas is working out strategies to recruit companies that will make Texas number one in the aerospace sector. And one of the top reasons Greg Abbott has come to lay eyes the far south is Salinas’s contribution to the acquisition of Space X., the new rocket launch site at Boca Chica beach near Brownsville.
“I think they’re still in the design face. I believe they are probably still sampling some of the soils out there before they break ground,” says Salinas.
Space X has pushed back their first launch date from 2017 to 2018… and they’re expected to break ground in the next few months. In the meantime, Salinas wants to continue harvesting the group he says will lead to hundreds of jobs right in our backyard, The Millenials.
“I mean they need scientists, they need engineers, they need physicists i mean anything having to do with problem solving,” says Salinas, “looking forward to fully develop this aerospace cluster.”
Salinas’ term with the aerospace board will last four years through September 1st 2019.
