Local News

A massive conservation effort in the works in the South Padre Island region.

The Nature Conservancy, along with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the Texas Natural Resource Damage Assessment Trustees, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and the Texas General Land Office, announce the purchase of over 6,000 acres dedicated for conservation.

The newly acquired land is about five miles north of where the pavement ends on the northern end of South Padre Island. The $16 million investment will be used to protect 16 animal species, including the critically endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle.
