While the subject of abortion has spurred Brownsville to national headlines, a group of pro-choice advocates are demonstrating across the Rio Grande Valley, at Crisis Pregnancy Centers, including New Life Pregnancy Help Center in Brownsville.
The demonstrations are part of a nation-wide campaign called “Expose Fake Clinics.”
“In our community I feel it is especially harmful because we only have one abortion provider and we have four crisis pregnancy centers,” said Ofelia Alonso, a student organizer.
The Expose Fake Clinics campaign, claims Crisis Pregnancy Centers do not provide comprehensive reproductive health care, and instead, use ads to “trick” pregnant people into making an appointment, promising free pregnancy tests or pregnancy support.
Campaign demonstrators say once inside a Crisis Pregnancy Center, women are pressured about their reproductive health decisions, often delaying their procedure or pushing them past the deadline for a legal abortion.
“Patients that are in a time where they need medical help and actual counseling are targeted by these clinics because they know they are vulnerable, and that a free pregnancy test would entice them to come into their establishment,” Alonso said.
Yesterday, a larger group of protestors demonstrated outside the McAllen Pregnancy Center, where pro-choice activists held a banner and chanted, “This is a fake clinic.”
Tomorrow, the activists will return to the crisis pregnancy center in McAllen to protest again.
