MCALLEN, Texas – Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan visited with McAllen officials over the weekend.
The trip came a day after the Pentagon sparked criticism by diverting 1.5 billion dollars toward border barriers. Some of that money was from the U.S. effort in Afghanistan.
Shanahan says this is the last time he’ll divert Pentagon money to the border.
“We have very smart people here in the department, and we found ways to do this without having any impact on readiness.” Says Shanahan.
The White House hasn’t pushed ahead with their plans to formally nominate Shanahan, but this week’s dispute over border wall funding is unlikely to help his cause with senate Democrats.
