4 year old girl shot while traveling to the United States

Local News

A 4 year old girl who was shot while traveling to the United States has been taken to a valley hospital to receive medical care on her wound. Border Patrol agents say they found the toddler and her mother walking near Hidalgo. The woman from El Salvador told agents she and her daughter were riding in a train through Mexico with their smugglers and other immigrants when the incident happened.

Border Patrol says rival smugglers robbed the train. One of the smugglers attempted to strike one of the immigrants with the pistol, he ended up discharging it and striking the little girl in the shoulder.

The Border Patrol stated the girl was taken to a hospital in Mexico right after the incident to get the bullet out of her shoulder. She was later released to her smugglers.

Border Patrol officials urge people in the United States to not put their loved at risk by encouraging them to enter the U.S. without proper documentation.
